Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells made from porcelain or composite resin. They are bonded to the front surface of your teeth to cover imperfections, creating a bright, symmetrical, and attractive smile. Here’s why veneers are essential for both cosmetic and dental health:

Enhance Your Smile Instantly

Veneers can correct a wide range of cosmetic issues, including:

Discolored or stained teeth

Chipped or cracked teeth

Uneven or irregularly shaped teeth

Gaps between teeth

Minor alignment issues

By covering these imperfections, veneers provide an instant smile transformation that looks completely natural.

Boost Confidence and Self-Esteem

When your teeth look good, you naturally smile more and feel more confident. Dental veneers can turn a smile you hide into one you’re proud to show off—positively impacting both your personal and professional life.

Protect and Strengthen Your Teeth

Veneers don’t just improve aesthetics—they can strengthen weakened teeth. By covering the tooth’s surface, veneers act as a protective layer, reducing the risk of further wear, chips, or damage.

Long-Lasting and Durable

High-quality veneers, particularly porcelain veneers, are strong, durable, and stain-resistant. With proper care, they can last 10–15 years or longer, making them a lasting investment in your smile and oral health.

Quick and Minimally Invasive

Unlike orthodontic treatments that may take months or years, veneers provide a fast cosmetic solution. Most patients can achieve a dramatic smile transformation in just a few visits, often with minimal preparation of the natural teeth.

Getting dental veneers typically involves several steps to ensure comfort, precision, and natural results:

Consultation & Smile Assessment

Your dentist evaluates your teeth, discusses your goals, and determines if veneers are the best option. Digital imaging may be used to preview your new smile.

Preparation of Teeth

A thin layer of enamel may be removed from the front of your teeth to ensure a perfect fit for the veneers. This process is minimal and carefully done to preserve your natural teeth.

Custom Fabrication

Your veneers are custom-designed in a dental lab to match the shape, color, and size of your natural teeth, creating a seamless, natural look.

Bonding the Veneers

The veneers are permanently bonded to your teeth using a strong dental adhesive. Your dentist ensures proper fit, alignment, and appearance before finalizing the placement.

Finishing and Polishing

The veneers are polished for a natural sheen, giving you a beautiful, radiant smile that looks and feels like natural teeth.

Severe gum disease has been linked to both heart disease and diabetes. There’s good news though. If detected and treated early, you can get your oral health back on track.

Here’s a look at the signs of gum disease to watch for. Plus, find out who’s most at risk and what you can do to prevent gum disease.

What is gum disease?

First things first, you may be asking yourself “what is gum disease, exactly?” That’s a great question. Knowing what gum disease is can help you to prevent it.

It all starts with a build-up of plaque on your teeth. (You know that icky, sticky film you can sometimes feel with your tongue?) If plaque isn’t removed, it hardens and turns into tartar. This acts as a home and protective shield for bacteria. Tartar also causes the gums to become irritated, inflamed, and can lead to infection.

Infection can spread to the surrounding bone and soft tissue. Chewing can become painful and, in more serious cases, teeth can become loose or need removing.

Gingivitis

Periodontitis

‍

Gingivitis

Studies show that gingivitis is common, affecting almost 29% of adults in Australia. Gingivitis is a mild, early-stage gum disease. The term ‘gingivitis’ literally means ‘inflammation of the gums’. That may be the first thing you notice; your gums look red or puffy, compared to normal. Or you may see blood when brushing and flossing. Gingivitis can also cause bad breath (halitosis). The best news is that it is curable, leaving no lasting damage. However, if you ignore the symptoms of gum disease, it can lead to periodontitis or a dental emergency.

‍
Periodontitis‍

Periodontitis (AKA periodontal disease) is a more severe type of gum disease. It is a bacterial infection of the tissue that holds your teeth in position. It can result in permanent damage to your gum tissue and the soft tissue supporting your teeth, as well as bone loss. Eventually, it can lead to tooth loss. Let’s look at the three stages of this advanced form of gum disease.

‍

Stage 1 periodontitis (early)

In its early stage, inflammation damages the fibres that connect the roots of the teeth to the tooth socket. For you, it’s impossible to know that your gingivitis has progressed to early-stage periodontitis. You may have a little more inflammation, but that’s about it.

‍

Stage 2 periodontitis (moderate)

Without treatment, the disease will progress to moderate periodontal disease. The only difference between stage one and two is that there is further damage to the fibres (periodontal ligaments). The damage is permanent and will be noticeable to your Potts Point dentist.

‍

Stage 3 periodontitis (advanced)

In advanced periodontal disease your gums pull away (recede) from your teeth. You may notice that your teeth appear longer, as a result. Damage to the gums, bone and connective tissues may cause your teeth to shift or become loose. Maybe your bite is misaligned, or chewing has become painful. At this stage, treatment is paramount to help save your teeth. Know that in advanced-stage periodontitis it may not be possible to save all your teeth. Dentures or dental implants may be needed.

‍

Gum disease symptoms

The signs of gum disease may depend at which stage you’re at. Common symptoms include:

Bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing

Gum redness and inflammation

Bad breath

Receding gums

Tooth sensitivity

Pain when biting or chewing

Shifting or loose teeth

Tooth loss

‍

Who’s at risk?

Most people have some gingivitis in their mouth. Plaque is constantly forming and reforming. This is why it’s so important to brush and floss teeth regularly. It’s also why people with poor oral hygiene are at high risk of gum disease.

Smoking is the biggest risk factor for periodontitis.

‍

When it comes to what causes gum disease, other risk factors to consider include:

Smoking (this is actually the biggest risk factor for periodontitis)

Diabetes — because of increased risk of infection

Family history — genetics make some people more susceptible to the bacteria in plaque than others

Hormonal changes in women — for example during pregnancy and menopause

Obesity

Poor nutrition

Health conditions — such as cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis

Medications — can reduce saliva production

Gum disease treatment

Treatment for gum disease depends on the person and the stage of disease. Essentially, the aim of treatment is to remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth and gums. Here’s how it’s done.

‍

Professional cleaning

Deep cleaning (AKA scaling and root planing) is a non-surgical treatment for gum disease. It’s very different from a regular professional clean, which focuses on the surfaces ‘above’ the gum line. Deep cleaning involves removing bacterial plaque and tartar that have formed ‘below’ the gum line and on the teeth and root surfaces.

Before the process begins, you’ll be given local anaesthetic. Your dentist will remove bacteria and tartar using special instruments. Tartar can also build-up on fillings that have become rough. In this case, the filling (as well as some of the tooth roots) may need to be reshaped or smoothed.

‍

Surgery

In cases of advanced gum disease, surgery may be necessary. Gum disease surgery is a common procedure. A small cut is made in the gum and a section of the tissue is folded back. Infected gum tissue is removed. Any plaque or bacteria that’s living below the gum line is cleaned away. Following treatment, the gums are sutured back using dissolvable stitches.

In both instances, your dentist should provide advice and instructions on how best to clean your teeth at home.

‍

How to prevent gum disease

The best way to prevent gum disease is by regularly brushing your teeth and flossing. While you may think you know how to properly clean your teeth, this isn’t always the case. Not only is plaque difficult to see, but some areas of the teeth are super hard to reach. Here are a few tips for good oral care.

Should I get veneers? This is a pretty common question among all who feel a bit shy or self-conscious about their appearance or those who might be struggling with some tooth imperfections.

The short answer is yes, veneers are worth considering. It is a popular treatment that can really transform patients’ smiles for long term. However, there are some things that you should think about before you book your veneers consultation with a local dentist in Sydney.

‍What are Veneers?

Veneers are a type of tooth-coloured capping applied over the tooth to improve the appearance of your tooth. This capping is usually made from porcelain or composite resin. It is bonded to the front of the tooth surface and can be very functional for concealing issues like chips, cracks, gaps or some discolouration. Veneers can also be used to improve the tooth’s shape or to enhance teeth that are small or damaged.

It is noteworthy that these treatments are considered cosmetic treatments. This is because the treatment is mostly used to improve the appearance of the tooth and doesn’t assist in tooth health.

When To Consider Veneers

Veneers can be a viable option in many cases. You can certainly consider these treatments if you want to enhance your appearance or if you feel self-conscious about your smile. These treatments are ideal for restoring all sorts of problems, including the following.

Discoloured or Stained Teeth: Veneers are a terrific alternative treatment if teeth whitening doesn’t work or your teeth might be too sensitive to endure teeth whitening processes. The veneer caps will permanently brighten your smile and hide all discolouration caused by aging, pigments and fluorosis.

Chips, Cracks or Worn Teeth: You can certainly consider veneers if you want to do some repairs on worn or damaged teeth. Veneers are great for filling up chips or cracks and can even lengthen or widen teeth that have been worn down over the years.

Gaps in Teeth: These tooth enhancements are excellent for filling out gaps between your teeth.

Conceal Misalignment: The cappings can also be useful for concealing slight misalignment in the teeth. This is a brilliant solution if you don’t want or cannot afford braces.

Even Misshapen or Uneven Teeth: Teeth that are misshapen, small or a bit uneven can also be restored with some veneers. These small changes can help you create a more uniform look and will do wonders for enhancing your smile.

Are Veneers Worth It?

For most people, veneers are worth the investment. This is especially true since the treatment is permanent and will instantly improve your smile. There are, however, a few considerations, like the following.

Tooth Enamel is Removed: When veneers are installed, the thin layer of enamel that covers your teeth is removed. This is an irreversible procedure. However, this layer is replaced with veneers that look just like real teeth and last 5 to 20 years.

A Significant Investment: You do need to save up for the treatment. Because it is a cosmetic procedure, medical aids usually don’t cover veneers. The procedure itself is also costly.

Veneers Can Be Damaged: After getting veneers, you will need to be careful with your teeth. Although these treatments are durable, they can crack or chip upon impact. If this happens, you will need to get the procedure redone or restored. Despite these challenges, most people still love their veneers. These treatments can even be life-changing for those who wish to transform their smile. Even though veneers are considered a cosmetic treatment, they also offer some physical benefits. The treatments can be great for strengthening weak or damaged teeth and can help you retain your natural teeth for longer.

Get Veneers Done in Sydney

At Dentistry At The Cross, we offer a wide range of dentistry and oral care services. Our dentists are skilled in veneer treatments and can help you decide if they’re the right choice for your smile or if another option would be better. Book a consultation with Dentistry At The Cross now to refresh your smile and boost your confidence.

A lot of people feel a bit nervous about making a booking with their local dentist. Dental procedures can oftentimes be uncomfortable and it is only natural to feel a bit anxious about someone getting close and personal as they peek into your mouth.

Fortunately, with a simple procedure like a check-up and clean, there is nothing to worry about. These procedures are painless, quick, and quite comfortable. Let’s take a look at what to expect.

‍An Easy Booking System

First, you will need to book your appointment at Dentistry At The Cross. Our online booking system makes it very easy to book your appointment. With this booking system, you can easily see when the dentist has available openings and you can choose a date and time that you are comfortable with.

If booking online feels a bit too robotic then you can always give our offices a call. Our receptionists will help you find an opening and will schedule you at a time or date that suits your busy schedule.

Clean and Stylish Facilities

When you arrive at Dentistry At The Cross, you will very likely be amazed at our modern facilities. Our dentistry offices are impeccable in terms of hygiene and everything from the waiting area to the dental operatories is immaculate. You certainly will be in good hands when you visit this clean and stylish facility.

A Friendly Welcome When You Arrive

You can expect a warm welcome when you arrive for your appointment. Our receptionists, dentists, and staff are all very welcoming and approachable so you will feel right at ease throughout your visit.

It’s Best to Arrive a Little Bit Early

It is always best to arrive a little bit early for your appointment so there will be enough time to fill out some forms and get formalities in place. It is generally recommended to arrive about 10 to 15 minutes early so you can take your time filling out the paperwork or ask some questions about the procedures.

The Best in Dentistry Equipment

As you pass from the waiting area to the dentist’s operatories, you will notice state-of-the-art equipment. At Dentistry At The Cross, we are fully equipped with the latest medical equipment. This allows us to provide patients with the best possible oral health care.

Thorough Examination or Check-up

When you book tooth cleaning at your dentist, you will always get a thorough examination. During this examination, the condition of your teeth and gums will be examined. These examinations are important because they help direct gum diseases or abnormalities in your tooth that should be addressed.

Thorough Teeth Cleaning

Teeth cleaning at your dentist is a little bit different from your typical brush at home. During these sessions, the hygienist will remove plaque and tartar buildup from your tooth. This is usually done with a scaler. The scaler is a manual or ultrasonic scrape that is designed to scrape away any build-up. After scaling the teeth, your teeth are polished with a gritty paste. This gritty paste smoothes the tooth surface and helps remove some stains on your teeth.

In some cases, the dentist might also floss between your teeth in hard-to-reach areas.

Your mouth is constantly rinsed throughout the process.

X-rays Might Be a Possibility

Hygienists might recommend an X-ray while they are getting your teeth cleaned. This is usually done when the dentists need a better look at your teeth or if they want to check for tooth decay between your teeth.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatments can be applied to strengthen your teeth. This treatment can also help protect your teeth from decay.

Oral Care Advice

Your oral hygienist might offer some advice on the best way to take care of your teeth. They can also recommend a follow-up appointment based on how much tartar buildup your teeth might have. For most people, it is fine to get their teeth cleaned every six months. Some might need cleaning a bit more frequently.

‍Book Now at The Best Dentists in Potts PointWhen you book with a reliable local dentist like Dentistry At The Cross in Potts Point, you will be in good hands and you will get a professional clean. We welcome you to book now and give your teeth and gums the best possible care.

Picture this…the beautiful, straight smile you’ve been dreaming of, without the hassle or not-so-discreet look of traditional metal braces. It’s a no-brainer, right? But wait. If it were that easy, why do some people still choose metal braces over invisible braces?

It’s the question on many people’s lips.

Let’s look at how exactly invisible braces work, how they compare to traditional metal braces and how much they cost. By the end of this post, you’ll be armed with all the knowledge you need to make the right decision for you—promise.

1 . What are invisible braces?

6 . At-home aligners vs Invisalign

7 . The final word…

What are invisible braces?

Invisible braces (AKA clear aligners or clear braces) are a series of clear, custom-made aligner trays. Unlike traditional metal braces, invisible teeth braces have no metal brackets and no wires. The clear aligner trays are made from thin, flexible plastic that fit snugly over your teeth.

The best bit… they’re barely noticeable—and removable. Uh huh, you can still chow down on your favourite food without fear it’ll get stuck in your braces.

How do clear invisible braces work?

The aligners are custom-made and work by applying gentle pressure to different parts of the teeth. Over time, the continued pressure shifts your teeth into the desired position.

For the magic to work, you’ll be provided with a series of aligners. Each new set of aligners targets different teeth. Unlike metal braces which place pressure on all the teeth, invisible braces move each tooth individually. This gives your dentist in Potts Point precise control which can mean faster, more predictable results.

On average, Invisalign treatment can take between 4-18 months. The clear aligners work by applying gentle pressure to different parts of the teeth. Over time, the continued pressure shifts your teeth into the desired position.

Do invisible braces take longer than metal braces?

There’s a misconception that invisible braces take longer to straighten teeth than metal braces. This isn’t so. In fact, in some cases clear aligners can work faster than traditional braces.

On average, Invisalign treatment can take between 4-18 months. In complex cases, it may take up to 24 months. Traditional metal braces may take between 6 months and 2 years to straighten your teeth.

Remember though, for invisible braces to be effective, the aligners must be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours a day. The aligners must be removed when eating or drinking anything other than water, but it’s vital to pop them straight back in afterwards. If you’re a frequent snacker, this might become a hindrance.

Still weighing up Invisalign vs metal braces? To be honest, there are positives and negatives for both orthodontic treatment options. To make things a little easier, here’s a look at the pros and cons of each.

How much do invisible braces cost?

Most people think invisible dental braces cost much more than regular braces. Truth is, the price of both teeth-straightening treatments can be similar. In some cases, invisible clear braces can cost less than metal braces. It really depends on the complexity of your case.

As a guide, the average cost of clear braces in Australia ranges from $5,000 to $9,000. Here at Dentistry At The Cross, the cost of Invisalign starts at $6,000.

In comparison, the cost of metal braces in Australia ranges from $4,000 to $7,000. Ceramic braces cost is slightly higher, between $6,000 to $9,000.

‍

What factors can affect the cost of invisible braces?

The complexity of your case

Length of treatment

How many sets of aligner trays you need

Whether you have dental insurance

‍

What factors can affect the cost of traditional metal braces?

The type of braces (i.e. metal, ceramic, lingual)

How well you care for your appliances

The experience and location of your orthodontist

Whether you have dental insurance

Don’t let the cost fade your smile. With our easy dental payment plans, you can enjoy a beautiful new smile now and pay in affordable instalments over time.

At-home aligners vs Invisalign

Over the last few years there’s been a surge in the number of at-home teeth-straightening options. At-home clear aligner brands like Byte, SmilePath, and NewSmile may promise to be a more cost-effective and convenient way to straighten your smile but are they…really?

Here’s a look at the pros and cons of at-home invisible braces.

Pros

Cons

Custom-made aligners

No initial check-up to identify underlying issues and ensure the correct aligner fit

Typically, less expensive than traditional braces or Invisalign

At-home aligners are only designed to treat mild to moderate cases

At-home delivery and treatment, so no need for orthodontic appointments

No professional checks to ensure the treatment is on track

Less time spent at the dentist

No orthodontist in case of an emergency or if you have concerns
